William Blake William Blake is one of England’s most famous literary figures. He is remembered and admired for his skill as a painter, engraver, and poet. He was born on Nov. 28, 1757 to a poor Hosier’s family living in or around London. Being of a poor family, Blake received little in the way of comfort or education while growing up. Amazingly, he did not attend school for very long and dropped out shortly after learning to read and write so that he could work in his father’s shop. The life of a hosier however was not the right path for Blake as he exhibited early on a skill for reading and drawing. Blake’s skill for reading can be seen in his understanding for and use of works such as the Bible and Greek classic literature. Interestingly enough, Blake’s skill for writing went largely unnoticed throughout his life. One of his more famous works, Songs of Innocence, which he wrote and illustrated, with the help of his wife Catherine Boucher, sold slowly and for on ly a few shillings during his day. Today a copy of this work sells for thousands. While his skill as a writer was not recognized until after his passing, at the age of 14 his father noticed his skill as an artist and apprenticed him to James Basire, a noted Engraver of the time. After spending some time as an apprentice and student at the Royal Academy, Blake was able to set up his own engraving business at 27 Broad Street in London. This venture proved to be largely unsuccessful and from this point on, in the year 1784, at the age of 27, Blake's career as an engraver-poet-prophet began. In addition to being a poet and engraver Blake is described as a prophet because many of his works are themed with religion. Right now however according to Blake the earth is still fallen and this is why life is the experience that he describes it to be. Overall I think that Blake’s point to be made is that life is not controlled by God and that he does not feel the presence of god in his life. If he were to accept god then he would have no way of explaining why his life is as it is. He tries to show people who disagree with this point their errors in thinking by using graphic images of reality as proof of his point.

Kari Martinsen’s name is not very well known in the United States. At the same time, in her native Norway and in Scandinavian countries in general she is considered one of the most important experts on clinical nursing and the theory of care. Her works, opinions and views have played a considerable role in building the current Scandinavian theory and practice of nursing, which is noticeably different from Gilligan’s Anglo-American tradition. And there are reasons why her philosophy – for she considers her approach to nursing and care to be nothing short of a full-fledged philosophy – is so popular in her native country and starts to spread across the ocean (which was further facilitated by the publication of the English translation of her book Care and Vulnerability in 2006). One of the main goals and principles of Martinsen’s philosophy is the idea that care and caring should be an all-pervading sentiment not only in nursing but in medicine in general. In other words, she opposes the idea that nurses should care while doctors cure – both parties should take equal parts in both processes. A new ‘gaze’ should be developed, a new way for doctors to view their patients – instead of a dehumanizing and analytical approach common in modern hospitals. That being said, it is one of the major ideas in Martinsen’s philosophy that the very concept of hospital should be reworked and altered. Hospital should be perceived as a dwelling – a place where people are invited to dwell, live and spend time, a place where they feel just as home as they feel among the members of their family. Again, in this she opposes a traditional, production-based approach, in which hospitals are perceived and built as purely commercial buildings, places where patients are analyzed, processed and worked on to change them into something else. According to Martinsen’s view, these are not just two different approaches to a single problem – they are two different approaches to life in general. Her approach views patients as human beings, as individuals with dignity in and of themselves. A traditional approach reduces patients to their diseases and conditions, takes away their humanity and sorts them into categories. The idea of compassion, the view that every human being is unique and deserves to be loved and cared for is what makes Kari Martinsen and her philosophy so popular now, when we see the resurgence of humanistic approaches in medicine – and it is likely that we are going to hear more about her in the years to come. Li Po One of Chinas Most Renowned Poets

The classical Chinese poet Li Po was both a rebel wanderer and a courtier. He is revered along with his contemporary, Tu Fu, as one of the two greatest Chinese poets. Li Po’s Early Life The great Chinese poet Li Po was born in 701 and grew up in western China, in Sichuan province near Chengdu. He was a gifted student, studied the classic Confucian works as well as other more esoteric and Romantic literature; by the time he was a young man he was an accomplished swordsman, practitioner of the martial arts and bon vivant. He began his wanderings in his mid-20s when he sailed down the Yangtze River to Nanjing, studied with a Taoist master, and entered into a brief marriage with the daughter of a local official in Yunmeng. She evidently left him and took the children because he had not secured a government position as she hoped and instead had dedicated himself to wine and song. In the Imperial Court In his wandering years, Li Po had befriended the Taoist scholar Wu Yun, who praised Li Po so highly to the emperor that he was invited to the court in Chang’an in 742. There he made such an impression that he was dubbed â€Å"the Immortal banished from heaven† and given a post translating and providing poetry for the emperor. He participated in the court revels, wrote a number of poems about events in court, and was renowned for his literary performances. But he was often drunk and outspoken and not at all suited to the strictures and the delicate hierarchies of court life. In 744 he was banished from court and went back to his wandering life. War and Exile After leaving Chang’an, Li Po formally became a Taoist and in 744 he met his great poetic counterpart and rival, Tu Fu, who said the two were like brothers and slept together under a single cover. In 756, Li Po was mixed up in the political upheaval of the An Lushan Rebellion and was captured and sentenced to death for his involvement. A military officer whom he had saved from court-martial many years before and who was by now a powerful general intervened and Li Po was instead banished to the far southwestern interior of China. He wandered slowly toward his exile, writing poems along the way, and in the end was pardoned before he got there. Li Po’s Death and Legacy Legend has it that Li Po died embracing the moon—late at night, drunk, in a canoe out on the river, he caught sight of the moon’s reflection, leaped in, and fell into the watery depths. Scholars, however, believe he died from cirrhosis of the liver or from mercury poisoning that resulted from Taoist longevity elixirs. Author of 100,000 poems, he was a nobody in a class-bound Confucian society and lived the wild poet’s life long before the Romantics. About 1,100 of his poems are still in existence.

The show took place in Limestone, Maine, on Loring Air Force Base. We left around 11 a.m. somewhat prepared for the long haul ahead of us. VW busses and other cars adorned with various Phish stickers whizzed by us. An aura of anticipation hung over the Phishheads as they inched their way down the abandoned roads toward their destination. After arriving and setting up our tents, my friends and I felt the intense need to wander around the heavily occupied base. It was a small city of 65,000 different people. Throngs of hippies clothed in colorful patchworks filled the streets of the base. After wandering for a couple of hours, we climbed into our tents to rest for the long day ahead. At the end of long Bathtub Gin, the sky was set aflame with sprays of fireworks. After a long day of partying and dancing, the fans once again massed together to head back to their sites. The second day the weather was less foggy and chilly. Just as Phish opened up with their first set, the clouds parted and the sun emerged, evoking cheers from the crowd. Phish played even better than the day before. Trey talked to the crowd as if they were long lost friends and Fishman gave us his silly grin. With new tunes such as Ghost and old ones like Makasupa Policeman they kept the crowd grooving until nightfall. With night, the mood changed with a trippy version of 2001 and a crazy Bathtub Gin. After the entire crowd had peaked, Phish began to slow it down and Trey spoke to the crowd again. Each day the thousands of fans had taken part in painting and designing various pieces of wood; the wood had then been constructed into a tall tower that loomed over the crowd. While Fishman jammed on the guitar, Trey took a spraypaint bottle to the stage. Taking turns, the members of Phish adorned the stage with intricate designs. Trey then took a large piece of the wood with Phishs art on it and passed it to the crowd. They carefully passed it through the flock of people to the tower of art and with the help of security, it was fastened on to the tower. The art of both the fans and the group had emerged; it was a tribal experience. Suddenly, out of nowhere emerged a blazing flame. The flame spread to the tower and the crowd watched in sheer amazement as the tower went up in flames. It was a good-bye to the weekend. The party was over and the exhausted fans began to start their trek back to daily life and existence.
