Amen, MD, is a child and adult psychiatrist, a nuclear brain imaging specialist, and a New York Times bestselling author. His books include the groundbreaking Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 7 Types of ADD, which was published in 2013. Dr. Amen is also the founder of eight Amen Clinics across the United States. At these clinics, psychiatrists use single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) brain imaging to identify the type of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) a patient has, enabling them to receive targeted treatment. A SPECT scan shows how the blood flows through the brain. The Standard Method of Diagnosing ADHD The standard means of assessing and diagnosing ADHD used by mental health professionals in the United States is to use the criteria established in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM), which identifies three presentations of ADHD:   Predominantly inattentive presentation  Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentationCombined presentation   Dr. Daniel Amens Approach to ADD Diagnosis Using SPECT scans on tens of thousands of patients, Dr. Amen has identified seven types of ADD. Dr. Amen uses the term ADD, rather than ADHD, as he feels ADD is more reflective of the condition. When a person has been diagnosed with an ADD type, Dr. Amen uses a combination of prescription medication, supplements, and lifestyle changes to treat the condition. Each type of ADD has its own treatment recommendations.   Neuroimaging in Psychiatry Functional neuroimaging, such as SPECT scanning, is considered a helpful tool for researchers. It has been invaluable in understanding the neurocircuitry (activity in the brain) of various psychiatric conditions. However, mainstream psychiatrists do not generally believe they are a valid technique to use for regular clinical diagnosis. Critics of Dr. Amens claim that he uses the scans to support the marketing of his procedures and products. 7 Types of ADD According to Dr. Daniel Amen Dr. Amens particular ADHD sub-types and his package of recommendations are not broadly established and reflect his particular biases. With these caveats, here are Dr. Amen’s types of ADD and his treatment recommendations: Type 1: Classic ADD Symptoms include being inattentive, distractible, disorganized, hyperactive, restless, and impulsive. Procrastination can also be an issue. People with Classic ADD have reduced blood flow in the brain area of the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. The basal ganglia help produce dopamine.   The goal of the treatment is to increase dopamine levels in the following ways: Either using stimulant medication, such as Adderall or Concerta, or using stimulating supplements, such as  Rhodiola, green tea, or ginseng. The amino acid L-tyrosine is also used, as its a building block of dopamine.Exercise is encouraged because it boosts dopamine.A fish oil supplement thats higher in omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). For example, a 60:40 ratio is recommended.A diet thats higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates is encouraged. Type 2: Inattentive ADD   Symptoms include being inattentive and easily distracted (but not hyperactive), sluggish, and  slow-moving, with low motivation. People with Inattentive ADD are often described as space cadets, daydreamers, and couch potatoes. This type is more common in girls than boys and is often diagnosed later in life because these people dont have behavior problems.?? People with Inattentive ADD have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex as well as low levels of dopamine. Treatment is the same as for Type 1. Type 3: Overfocused ADD Overfocused ADD includes Classic ADD symptoms, plus trouble shifting attention, frequently getting stuck in loops of negative thoughts or behaviors, obsessive, excessive worrying, inflexibility, and frequent oppositional and argumentative behavior. People with Overfocused ADD have a deficiency of serotonin and dopamine. The goal of treatment is to increase both of these neurotransmitters, the nervous system’s chemical messengers. Dr. Amen explains that because people with this ADD type become more worried and anxious when taking stimulant medication, he tries supplements first. He prescribes medications only if supplements arent effective. Treatment includes: Supplements are used to boost dopamine, such as L-tryptophan. 5-Hydroxytryptophan, a naturally occurring amino acid known as 5-HTP, is used as an antidepressant. Other supplements include saffron and inositol, which increase focus and mental clarity.Antidepressant medication examples are Effexor, Pristiq, or Cymbalta.  Neurofeedback, a form of biofeedback, is also recommended. It teaches people to regulate their brain function.People who have this ADD type do not do well on a high protein diet as it can prompt mean behavior. Type 4: Temporal Lobe ADD This type includes Classic ADD symptoms plus being irritable, quick-tempered and aggressive, and having dark thoughts, mood instability,  and mild paranoia. People with this type might have visual changes and learning and memory problems may be present. People with Temporal Lobe ADD have irregularities in their temporal lobes and less activity in the prefrontal cortex part of the brain. The goal of treatment is to soothe neuronal activity and stop nerve cells from over-firing or firing unpredictably. Treatment includes: The amino acid gamma-aminobutyric acid  (GABA) to help to calm the nerve cells.A magnesium supplement helps with anxiety and irritability.Anticonvulsant medications can help stabilize moods.  Gingko or vinpocetine can assist with learning and memory issues.  A ketogenic diet, which is a diet that is higher in protein, might be recommended. Type 5: Limbic ADD This type includes Classic ADD symptoms plus chronic low-level sadness, but not depression. Negativity, glass-half-empty syndrome, low energy, frequent feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, and low self-esteem  are other symptoms of this type. People with Limbic ADD have excessive activity in the limbic section of the brain, which is where moods are controlled. They have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex both when relaxing and focusing on a task. Treatment includes: DL-phenylalanine (DLPA), L-tyrosine, and SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) are the most effective supplements.  An anti-depressant, Wellbutrin or imipramine, might be prescribed.Exercise, fish oil, and an appropriate diet are also recommended.  An elimination diet, where dairy, sugar, wheat,  and corn are eliminated from the diet for three weeks, will help to determine if the person has these food sensitivities. Type 6: Ring of Fire ADD This is a more extreme version of Classic ADD, plus being extremely distractible, angry, irritable, and overly sensitive to noise, light, clothes,  and touch. People with this type are often inflexible, extremely verbal, oppositional, and have cyclic moodiness. People with Ring of Fire ADD have an overactive brain. There are excessive amounts of activity in the cerebral cortex and other areas of the brain. Treatment includes: Beginning with an elimination diet if it appears a food allergy might be present.  Stimulants alone could make symptoms increase. GABA, 5-HTP, and L-tyrosine supplements help to increase GABA and serotonin levels.Medications that might be prescribed include anticonvulsants and blood pressure medications like guanfacine or clonidine to help reduce hyperactivity. Type 7:  Anxious ADD Anxious ADD includes Classic ADD symptoms plus feeling anxious and tense, physical stress symptoms like a headache and stomachache, freezing when in situations that cause anxiety, and anticipating the worst. People with Anxious ADD have high levels of activity in the basal ganglia, which aids in making dopamine. This differs from the majority of the other ADD types, which have low activity in this part of the brain. The goal of treatment is to help with relaxation and increase GABA and dopamine levels. Treatment includes: Supplements that have a calming effect, like L-theanine, relora, magnesium, and holy basil.Stimulants taken on their own can cause more anxiety. The river was an important avenue of approach for the Union army to reach and gain control of Vicksburg. The Loess Bluffs bordering the Mississippi River provided excellent observation positions for Confederate artillery to fire upon any enemy approaching via the river. Ships were particularly vulnerable to their fire because of an oxbow north of the city’s waterfront where ships were forced to slow down to make the treacherous turn. The river approach afforded no opportunities for cover and concealment. Control, hate, and anger are the three main qualities of this disorder. Every human being desires freedom and in any relationship the threat to freedom is the greatest danger. In the case of mothers-in-law, there is a desire to control and this affects the freedom of the younger ones.   When there is an overwhelming desire to control, mothers are not willing to let go of their sons even when they get married. Mothers try to make decisions for their sons even after their marriages and control them by keeping track of their expenditure patterns, where they are going, what they are wearing and advising them even in matters such as where to buy a house. Many mothers feel more in control when they are able to predict the behavior of others and when others meet their expectations. Hatred and anger are often signs of insecurity. Here, the mothers might have a feeling that their sons are leaving them for another woman and this arouses a lot of hatred and anger towards her son’s wife. This is more compounded when the mother in law also happens to be a widow. Such anger and hatred can cause destruction not only to their sons and wives but also to her. Sometimes, the problem may lie with a daughter-in-law’s perception of her mother in law. When a woman gets married, she needs to cope with a new family with new rules. She often fears her mother in law even before knowing her because of her exposure to the image of a mother in law as evil personified in the media. A mother-in-law is often depicted as a dragon personified in TV serials and novels. Due to this stereotyping of mother-in-laws, the son’s wife enters her new life with a lot of doubt, anxiety and worry. In this case, even a small remark by her mother-in-law will be seen in an enlarged dimension. She might be so wary of her that she does not communicate much with her mother-in-law. This can lead to a huge gap between the two women and lead to mother-in-law based conflicts. In this case it’s easy for the mother in law to judge her incommunicative daughter in law as a careless and destructive person. Another reason contributing to this conflict is that the mother in law might be too dependent on her son for her self-esteem needs. She needs him so that she might get a sense of importance. When she sees her son beginning to rely more on his wife, she feels upset and might start feigning sickness just to get the immediate attention from her son. Apart from the reasons cited above there might also be the case of mothers-in-law hating their daughters-in-law due to their personal reluctance to accept another woman into the household. There are likely to be differences based on status, education, age and culture between a married woman and her mother in law. They then discuss how to make it better. The broadsheet article is slightly biased against America, as it says, police manhandled protestors. This is using the word manhandled meaning that they disapprove and may favour the opinion of the protestors. The tabloid article is not biased towards or against any of the sides at the world summit. I do think that the broadsheet is not unfair to be biased against America because, as it states in their article, America is the worlds number one polluter, yet they are not doing much about it. This is a proved, certifies fact and although the article contains many facts, it also has quite a few opinions as well. When they start with the sentence, the earth summit ended amid chaos and acrimony, they make it sound as if it is much worse than it actually is. Also, when it mentions how the police manhandled protestors, it could have just said something like , removed, or ushered out, but they chose to write manhandled which is much more aggressive, therefore being what they think really happened as opposed to what did happen. Also, it says in the second paragraph, Kofi Annan, the united national secretary general was left insisting that the $50 million (i 33 million) summit wad not a failure. They could have left the facts about the summits cost out of it but they kept it in to emphasize how much of a ridiculous amount of money was spent on it and how it was a failure. In fact, it seems it was a failure. Although they spent so much money on it, they only reached two firm targets; to reduce the number of people without access to sanitation by half by 2015 and setting up marine reserves by 2012. Others such as banning toxic chemicals and protecting fish stocks, have been heavily qualified. Other promises in the final agreement are repeats of previous declarations or represent a weakening of earlier deals. The headline or title of the article is, US critics jeer Powell as summit ends on discord. This sums up the way the protestors acted and how they did a mass walkout about the way they disapproved of what Powell was saying. Also they mention that summit ends in discord, which means that they sort of agree that it was a waste of time and that not enough was done at this years world summit because although there was something done, it was not enough, therefore agreeing with the protestors that it was a complete and utter waste of time and money. The sub-heading reads, Powells speech makes clear that Bush has written off the planet and has abdicated world leadership. The speech obviously does not actually say this in these words, it is just summing up what it is basically saying, it is merely unfortunate that this message is coming across, although this may be the broadsheet newspaper twisting what Powells speech says to make it to be what they want to hear, This is by far changing the truth but then keeping all the basic facts in place.

William Blake William Blake is one of England’s most famous literary figures. He is remembered and admired for his skill as a painter, engraver, and poet. He was born on Nov. 28, 1757 to a poor Hosier’s family living in or around London. Being of a poor family, Blake received little in the way of comfort or education while growing up. Amazingly, he did not attend school for very long and dropped out shortly after learning to read and write so that he could work in his father’s shop. The life of a hosier however was not the right path for Blake as he exhibited early on a skill for reading and drawing. Blake’s skill for reading can be seen in his understanding for and use of works such as the Bible and Greek classic literature. Interestingly enough, Blake’s skill for writing went largely unnoticed throughout his life. One of his more famous works, Songs of Innocence, which he wrote and illustrated, with the help of his wife Catherine Boucher, sold slowly and for on ly a few shillings during his day. Today a copy of this work sells for thousands. While his skill as a writer was not recognized until after his passing, at the age of 14 his father noticed his skill as an artist and apprenticed him to James Basire, a noted Engraver of the time. After spending some time as an apprentice and student at the Royal Academy, Blake was able to set up his own engraving business at 27 Broad Street in London. This venture proved to be largely unsuccessful and from this point on, in the year 1784, at the age of 27, Blake's career as an engraver-poet-prophet began. Kari Martinsen’s name is not very well known in the United States. At the same time, in her native Norway and in Scandinavian countries in general she is considered one of the most important experts on clinical nursing and the theory of care. Her works, opinions and views have played a considerable role in building the current Scandinavian theory and practice of nursing, which is noticeably different from Gilligan’s Anglo-American tradition. And there are reasons why her philosophy – for she considers her approach to nursing and care to be nothing short of a full-fledged philosophy – is so popular in her native country and starts to spread across the ocean (which was further facilitated by the publication of the English translation of her book Care and Vulnerability in 2006). One of the main goals and principles of Martinsen’s philosophy is the idea that care and caring should be an all-pervading sentiment not only in nursing but in medicine in general. In other words, she opposes the idea that nurses should care while doctors cure – both parties should take equal parts in both processes.
